About Us

The John A Bukowski Shelter for Animals is located in Bloomfield, NJ. Managed by the township of Bloomfield, the shelter’s animal control serves the towns of Bloomfield and Caldwell. The town, along with the shelter’s volunteers, socialize the animals in residence as well as help potential adopters find the perfect addition to their family.

Skye

Skye was brought into Bukowski Animal Shelter as a puppy with her mouth wired shut (which has left a scar around her muzzle). She was adopted however this was not a successful match and she was returned in April. My husband and I met her the same week she was returned and immediately fell in love with her. She immediately stroke a friendship with our dog, Maya, and they have a very close bond. On weekends in the winter she goes to the local dog parks and in the summer she goes up to the lake. We have been blessed to have her as an addition to our home.

Many volunteers are using Gentle Leaders to walk the dogs in residence. These face harnesses (much like a horse bridle) help control where the dogs are looking and allow people to walk dogs that normally pull with much ease. These headcollars are not muzzles--the dogs still have the ability to fully open their mouths--and it takes a couple walks before the dogs are fully comfortable with them. We do recommend their use and will happily show all potential adopters how to use and put them on. They make wonderful training tools. To learn more, visit: gentleleader.com.

Donations are always appreciated!

No animal is eligible for adoption until it is spayed or neutered by the shelter but applications will be accepted.

Please Note: Potential adoptors should realize that there are a lot of bully breed mixes out there. These breeds, while they do have their quirks, also have a bad rap. It is a well-known fact that well-managed, responsibly owned pit bulls are some of the best family dogs. The American Temperament Test Society lists this breed as one of the most stable temperaments of any of the purebreds, right up there with golden retrievers. The American Pit Bull Terrier especially likes to lick children's faces and wag their tail. They often tolerate the rough-and-tumble play of children and are easily trained due to their eagerness to please. Visit badrap.org to find out more about the breed.
